DescriptionVintage Bausch & Lomb optometrist's stool
. This stool was made by Bausch & Lomb Optical Co. of Rochester, N.Y., likely in the 1930s. Presumably it was originally sold as an optometrist or eye doctor's stool but could have been used by medical doctors, dentists, etc. (The stool belonged to my grandfather, a small town doctor, and later my father, a dentist.) Features a round wooden seat, padded and covered in faux leather black vinyl; cast iron base; and four swivel casters with rubber wheels. The rubber wheels are marked "Noelting-Faultless / Evansville, Ind." The seat measures about 13.5 inches across. The base/legs measure about 18.5 inches across (caster to caster). The stool's height is adjustable from about 22 to 28 inches. The seat is raised by lifting it up to the desired height (you can hear multiple click stops). Lifting the release handle drops the seat back to the low position (if the stem originally had a hydraulic mechanism, it no longer works). Very heavy (about 34 lbs).
The stool appears to have been partially restored and/or modified; the iron base is painted brown with a faux wood grain pattern (custom repaint job?) and the seat covering (upholstery-quality vinyl with fabric backing) presumably is not original. The wood seat (visible from below) appears to be stained reddish brown; I don't know if the wood is original or a replacement.
The stool is in good functional and cosmetic condition. There are extensive worn areas around the legs (revealing at least two paint layers and bare metal, which is possibly darkened with surface rust). The rest of the base shows wear, chips, scratches and marks. The casters show wear from years of use and one rubber wheel has a flat spot (it still rolls but you'll hear a "thump thump thump" when rolling the stool on a wood floor).
Will ship well protected in large box. Also available for pickup in Black Mountain, NC (near Asheville).
