A Scarce And Desirable Moro Panabas Or Nawi Battle Axe Circa 1910 Once The Property Of The Indianapolis Museum Of Art.
A fearsome axe used in battle, as a badge of rank, or by the village executioner. The finely forged laminated blade has a 19 inch cutting edge and is 4 and 5/8th inches wide at the tip. The panabas is famed as one on the largest Filipino blades.
The hilt is of narra wood and artistically wrapped in rattan. The hilt is decorated with incise carving. The wicked blade is thicker at its base the better to absorb the massive cutting force released by a blow from the panabas.
As with nearly all Moro weapons the panabas has an incredibly keen edge. Buyers must use extreme caution in handling one.
This panabas was deaccessioned by the Indianapolis Museum of Art and bears the Museum’s inventory number in red ink, S4282.81.10. This panabas was the gift of Mrs. and Mr. George R. Crook. The blade exhibits delamination indicative of skillful hand forging as befits a noble blade. Total length is 35 and 3/8th inches.
Condition is excellent for one of these rarities and the lovely patinated rattan is unbroken. The blade has some surface rust but is good. A rare opportunity to own a guaranteed museum quality panabas.
