    Description

    Edward R. Murrow Signed Letter
    Director, US Information Agency
    February 7,1963 (with Envelope)
In the 1950s and 1960s, the father of a friend of mine had a hobby of writing famous people, hoping to get a signed response. In the case of this letter, it worked. Edward R. Murrow was serving as the Director of the United States Information Agency, and this typed and signed letter is on letterhead from the Office of the Director. It is dated February 7, 1963 (and the envelope is postmarked February 7, 1963, Washington DC). The signature is "ER Murrow."
The letter measures 9 by 7 inches, and the envelope is 7-3/8th by 4.75 inches. The letter is intact (no tears), with some folds or creases in the corners (mainly visible in the lower left corner). The envelope at some point in the distant past was also folded, and the flap to the envelope has been removed. Both the letter and the envelope have brown stains, likely from glue that was applied to the back side and that bled through the paper and turned dark as it aged. You can see from the close-up photo that the browning slightly infringes on the left edge of the signature.
