Blanche Yurka was a stage and screen actress of Czech descent. Her most famous role was as
Madame Defarge in MGM's 1935 version of
Charles Dickens' "A Tale of Two Cities." Other film credits
include:
Song of Bernadette
(1944),
Cry of the Werewolf
(1944),
Bridge of San Luis Rey
(1944). In
addition to her many stage roles she was an occasional director and playwright. Wrote her
autobiography "Bohemian Girl" in 1970.
Born: 1887, St. Paul, Minnesota; died: 1974, New York City, New York.
